SMH® Proactive Approach to Back-Up Alarms Proves to be Beneficial for Industrial Vehicle Parts Provider
Typically, when distributors look at potential suppliers their primary focus is cost, often choosing a vendor that can provide the widest range of products at the lowest cost. However, many suppliers have actually developed and implemented engineering expertise in the products they offer.
For example, we noticed a trend for back-up alarms for industrial vehicles, once considered 'optional items' they quickly gained acceptance and eventually became a requirement on all vehicles. This trend convinced us to develop our own product line that would satisfy the needs of most manufacturers and establish us as more than just a parts supplier'."
Bob Stella, engineer for Systems Material Handling (SMH), relates his company's experience with the development of back-up alarms for industrial vehicles.
Stella continues, in the early 1980s low-level alarms for construction equipment were introduced as the direct result of increasing workplace accidents. Eventually, OSHA mandated back-up alarms on all construction vehicles and their migration into all types of industrial vehicles gradually occurred. We initially started buying alarms from OEMs and supplied them on an 'as requested' basis. In 1997, we looked at the growing demand for alarms, especially in the material handling industry and took an aggressive approach to design and manufacture our own product line. This was our first attempt at manufacturing a product versus purchasing and reselling. Obviously we made the right decision because we are now one of the industry leaders in vehicle alarm systems."
Workplace Accidents Require Attention
In the early 1980s construction workplace accidents had risen to a level where OSHA mandated several safety standards. One of the sub-standards were back-up alarms which stated: No employer shall permit earthmoving or compacting equipment which has an obstructed view to the rear to be used in reverse gear unless the equipment has in operation a reverse signal alarm distinguishable from the surrounding noise level or an employee signals that it is safe to do so. This sub-standard created a need that has actually made its way into the consumer automobile; many auto manufacturers offer options of interior and exterior back-up alarms.
Not only has the need for back-up alarms grown, but also the type of signal and sound level has been mandated by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) and OSHA. Some manufacturers have tried voice alarms, but the standard has become the audible horn or beep at a sound level of 87 to 112 decibels. There are also alarms that have a capability to automatically adjust their sound level to the ambient noise level in the workplace.
Need for Alarms Dictate Development
Stella adds, As a supplier of parts and accessories for more than 70 brands of industrial vehicles manufactured throughout the world we naturally added the back-up alarms to our inventory. As the demand for back-up alarms on construction vehicles migrated to all types of industrial vehicles we searched for a competitive advantage. It was determined that producing our own line was the answer. In 1997 we introduced the Safe-T-Alert line of back-up alarm systems to our customers.
SMH manufacturers a complete line of Safe-T-Alert back-up alarms in a variety of sizes, voltages and decibels. All alarms are protected against dust, moisture and vibration and are suitable for use in a wide range of applications including heavy duty, highway, commercial, material handling, construction, utility and emergency vehicles.
